Signs You May be Nesting
nesting: the tendency to arrange one's immediate surroundings to create a place where one feels secure, comfortable, or in control
You find yourself cleaning the washer and dryer at 10pm one evening. By cleaning, I mean making sure there are no fingerprints on the outside of the washing machine door, no left over detergent residue in the dispenser, no hard water build up on the inside of the washer door, and making sure no speck of dust is remotely close to the dryer.
You rearrange furniture in your bedroom so that everything fits and looks 'just so' since the baby will be staying in your room for a few months. You have to make a good impression on him! And that rearranging involves dragging a pine TV table out to the deck, then dragging a smaller table across the house to take the bigger table's place. All by yourself. At 11pm. Because it needed to get done NOW.
You obsessively arrange and rearrange the baby's clothes in the dresser drawers, or in our case, the elfa drawer unit that is in our room. I can't decide how to arrange them...NB-3 month in one drawer together, NB only in a drawer, 3 month only in a drawer, should I even bother with the 3-6 month clothes right now? This is serious stuff people!
You put four, yes FOUR, going home outfits in your hospital bag for the baby and three going home outfits for yourself. Why? Don't know, but I can't seem to stop making sure he has enough cute clothes to go home in.
When making out your daily to-do list, you put "Clean pull-out pantry" as number one priority. Forget getting food for your family to survive on or washing clothes so no one will have to go naked; cleaning out the pantry is THE MOST important task of the day. And it's on your mind until you get it done.
As soon as you walk in the door from church, you grab a dust rag and start systematically dusting every piece of wood or glass in your living room. As in get down on your hands and knees and reach into the far corners of the TV stand for that last speck of dust. You don't even change clothes first. No siree...the dusting CANNOT wait for a change of clothes!
Your husband walks into the kitchen to find you crawling around on your hands and knees cleaning the grout in the tile. Of course, my husband's first question isn't, "Why are you doing that?", it's "What happened?" He knows me oh so well...I'm a bit of a klutz and have a tendency to make big messes. :)
