It's Hard Being a Baby

Poor baby Beck. He's had a rough six weeks, which means Matt and I have had a rough six weeks. Let's quickly recap the events that began in early February:
  • Bad cough, congestion, wheezing, and fever leads to RSV diagnosis; start breathing treatments
  • About a week and a half later, continued congestion, inconsolable crying, fever leads to ear infection #1; start antibiotic #1
  • Another week goes by and continued wheezing leads to a trip to urgent care for a chest x-ray (clear, thank goodness), and more breathing treatments (4-5 times per day)
  • A week and a half later, continued congestion, inconsolable crying, fever leads to double ear infection, a re-diagnosis of RSV, antibiotic #2, and more breathing treatments
  • Four days later, irritable baby who keeps rubbing and pulling his ear and has a fever, goes back to the doctor to find out that his right ear didn't respond to antibiotic #2; start antibiotic #3.
  • 14 days later (Monday) he gets the all clear on his ear and a strict warning to NOT LET HIM GET A COLD because of the fluids and the Eustachian tubes swelling (or something like that) just makes him really susceptible to another infection.
The very next day, Beck comes down with a cold and starts showing all the symptoms of an ear infection.

Sigh.

Back to the doctor we go on Thursday. All clear; fluid in his ear, but it's not infected. Come back in a few days if his symptoms persist.

Saturday rolls around and he's still feeling bad so we head back to the doctor. Again, we get an all clear and a 'wait and see' diagnosis.

Yes, we visited our doctor's office THREE times in one week. I asked if they have guest rooms available at the office for families like us. Or maybe a 3-for-1 deal...come in three times in one week and your next visit is free!

It's only the end of March and Beck has almost met his $2400 health insurance deductible. The entire family should be getting free health care before too long, thanks to him. :)

All during this excitement, poor Beck has been awful at sleeping at night. He's always been a not-so-good nighttime sleeper, but being sick has made it worse. Like really bad. As in going from sleeping in 3-4 hour stretches to waking up every.hour.on.the.hour. And only wanting mommy. Matt tries to help so I can have some relief but Beck will have none of it. He's been known to cry and cry for up to an hour straight with Matt trying to comfort him. Ugh. Matt feels helpless and I feel like a zombie. Have you ever had only 4 hours of sleep (not 4 hours straight, mind you) for weeks at a time? I don't recommend it.

We are praying that our littlest buddy can get healthy quickly so that he can start feeling good again and not yucky. And we're praying for better nighttime sleep for all of us.
